  15. <p>     DIED. MILDRED MCAFEE HORTON, 94, former president of Wellesley
  16. College and director of the Navy's WAVES during World War II;
  17. in Randolph, New Hampshire. In 1936, at the age of 36, McAfee
  18. was appointed president of Wellesley, but her career--like
  19. those of many Americans--was put on hold in 1942, when she
  20. was chosen to lead Women Appointed for Volunteer Emergency Service.
  21. Briskly and imperturbably, she directed 82,000 Navy women in
  22. their World War II work as decoders, radio operators and air-traffic
  23. controllers.
