- <p> DIED. MILDRED MCAFEE HORTON, 94, former president of Wellesley
- College and director of the Navy's WAVES during World War II;
- in Randolph, New Hampshire. In 1936, at the age of 36, McAfee
- was appointed president of Wellesley, but her career--like
- those of many Americans--was put on hold in 1942, when she
- was chosen to lead Women Appointed for Volunteer Emergency Service.
- Briskly and imperturbably, she directed 82,000 Navy women in
- their World War II work as decoders, radio operators and air-traffic
- controllers.
